At a lattitude of nearly 70 degrees North, the University of Tromsø (UiT) is the world's northernmost university. UiT is a university, with around 6000 students and around 1800 staff. As with Norway's other universities, UiT's main tasks are research, education and conveying of information.

UiT may be relatively small, but the number of subjects offered is expansive. The university covers a wide variety of subjects and its students have more than 100 study programmes to choose between.

As an international institution of higher education and research, UiTø has students and academic staff from all over the world. Foreign citizens comprise around 10 percent of the total number of students. For the school term 2008/2009 there are now about 190 new students from foreign countries.

Many Muslims are currently studying at UiTø, and since June 2005 they have their own prayer room at the University. They pray in congregation or they can drop by and do a prayer when needed. Prayer mats and Qu’ran books are available in the prayer room. During the school term 2005/2006 there were over 40 Muslim students at the UiTø.

The prayer room for Muslims is located at the building called Breiviklia 3, ground floor, room number: N 014. For making ablution, there is a bathroom located at the beginning of the corridor.
There is also a “Silent room” in the building named Teorifagbygget, hus 1, beside the main cantina. This is a multi religious room with prayer facilities and Qu’ran books available.
